Carseat Recommendation 07/10/09 by
I'm struggling to find a car seat that works with my car that will fit my big kid. Help would be appreciated.

I have a little one, just approaching three, who is almost too heavy for a harnessed seat. At approaching 40lb and tall to boot (does not look an overweight kid) we are worried that he will be left with just a booster which isn't safe.

We have a Nissan Pathfinder, and would like to keep the child harnessed if possible. Any ideas?

How sad when a child is injured or dies due to not being in a car seat or improperly in a car seat. I think it's great you are trying to find out what will work best with your vehicle.

It's great that you're continuing to use the booster seat. Many people give up on them at a certain age or size not realizing that they could be putting their kids in danger. If kids aren't tall enough, along with their weight being within the guidelines, they could easily slip under the shoulder harness if in a car accident.

I'd not heard of these, but there are indeed two models that go above 40lbs-one that does 65lb and one that does 80lb. There is a Britax that goes up too and something called a Nautilus. I didn't realise there were any yet here I am with several choices! Thanks!

We had a 'grandparent' seat essentially, to carry nephews and nieces in. We didn't want to have a bunch of different seats for different ages and weights, so we got one that does from 5lb preemie to 80lb and 4' 3" in a harness.

Its called the Radian 80-its easy to install with the LATCH and tether system, and changing the size to fit the child isn't hard. Time consuming but easy. Should work for your bigger kid.

There are a couple of websites that I have found that might be useful to you. They both deal with consumer product reviews: http://www.consumersearch.com/car-seats and consumerreports.com. I hope that helps.

Oh I wish, I could help. But, I don't really have experience with the Nissan Pathfinder and it has been a while since we had to shop for car seats. But, I do wish you the best in your endeavor. ;)
